Pacifiers and Baptism Pics

Caroline is 8 weeks old today.  Wow.

I just do not really understand the whole pacifier thing.  I mean, it’s a little piece of plastic that babies suck on for half the day.  What?  Who else thinks this is weird?  I understand that sucking is a natural reflex for babies, that babies suck for comfort, and apparently our baby needs LOTS of comfort, because she wants to suck on her pacifier all day long.  But this does not explain the dozens of babies I’ve heard about recently that will not take a pacifier.  Do they not have the same reflex?  Are they just more comfortable so they don’t need the pacifier?

Since babies – with or without a pacifier – suck for food as well as comfort, would chewing gum be the grown-up equivalent of a pacifier?  It’s the same action we use to get food, but without actually getting any nutrients (though most gum these days does have plenty of chemicals in it)… I don’t find gum-chewing particularly comforting, though – it just burns nervous energy and freshens the breath.

Can someone explain this to me?

And now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for [drumroll, please]…… Baptism photos!  Here are my favorites from our incredibly talented friend Josie:
